3rd DISTRICT FINALLY GETS REPRESENTATION AGAIN
Local labor activist and long time community leader Ed Barnes, 80 years old, was sworn in as County Commissioner representing the 3rd District on Tuesday June 10th to a capacity crowd of supporters.
Rejecting long time state-wide tradition which has benefited the local Republican party in the past of appointing the top choice for replacements submitted by the party, the sitting Republican commissioners David Madore and Tom Mielke instead chose third choice Barnes to replace Steve Stuart who resigned in April to become Ridgefiled city manager. Madore and Mielke had 60 days from Stuart's resignation to select a choice from the list submitted by the Clark County Democrats but nearly ran out the time period (forcing the Governor to intervene), even after extensive interviewing and ample time to consider the choices.
The 3rd district seat is up for re-election in November 2014. The Clark County Democrats top choice to replace Stuart, Craig Pridemore is running for the position which Ed Barnes made clear from the start he is not interested in running. Barnes has been a vocal supporter of Craig Pridemore.
