A Great Opportunity to Learn how our System Works!
First and foremost, you will never again question that every vote is counted! You will be able to assure family, friends and anyone who asks that Clark County has one of the most thorough election processes. The Elections Office goes out of its way to insure that every ballot is carefully read (and re-read) to insure that voter intention is fully understood. There are no ‘hanging chads’ here!
The major political parties have a responsibility to provide official party observers to monitor elections. These Observers are an extension of the ‘poll watchers’ used in the day before vote-by-mail. Observing is now much more interesting. Washington State provides this opportunity for citizen involvement in the political system. Many of us have wondered how this vote-by-mail works behind the scenes, and Election Observers play a unique role.
The Election Officials are especially thankful to have the Democrats present. We have a reputation in Clark County for being interested and appreciative of the hard work that goes into each and every election.
If you are curious, you will certainly enjoy seeing a complex process which incorporates both manual and technological phases into one smooth end-to-end ‘ballot factory’. You will see just how all those signatures are verified, the envelopes separated from ballots to insure confidentiality, the ballots are not only counted, they are weighed! Another special team looks at the mismarks, the mistakes, the notes, the coffee stains … to insure that every selection is understood.
After one training/certification session (June 4 at 6:30), you will be ready to spend a few observation sessions during the coming elections. Observing will give you an extra boost of interest and energy during the campaign season.
